Can a heavy key chain harm your ignition?
LockMan Locksmiths Tip #1 Yes it can. Ignitions have little ridges built into the inside of the key hole that help guide the key into place, so everything lines up properly and the key will turn. These ridges are made out of a cast metal material that is not real hard. When a weighty key chain swings back and forth as you drive down the road, it can wear out these alignment ridges causing your key not to turn eventually.

Solution: Keep the rest of your keys separate, and as few as possible on the chain where your ignition key is. We do replace ignitions on some cars.
